Rooms

There are a number of room types available at Helen Lowry Hall. New residents are offered several choices about their preferred room (single, double, regular, large) and living area (all-female, alcohol-free, quiet). Mature and returning students are also given the option to self-cater.

Each room is furnished, including the following:

  • A divan bed with drawers underneath
  • A mattress and under blanket (some bedding is available for hire)
  • A telephone with voicemail
  • A broadband internet connection (monthly usage at your own expense)
  • A desk with drawers, a chair and a desk lamp
  • An armchair
  • A large wardrobe with shelves
  • A bookcase and cupboard with mirror
  • A notice board
  • A rubbish bin
  • A heater and a smoke alarm
  • Some larger rooms may also have a couch and an additional/larger bookcase.

There are some basic guidelines for living in a room at Helen Lowry that all residents are asked to follow. Please do not dry clothes in your room (as this can cause mould problems. Washing lines and dryers are available in all areas), and please take good care of the furnishings. We ask that you do not use drawing pins, stickers or adhesive tape on the woodwork or walls, but blutak is completely fine and we encourage its use. You will be expected to keep your own room clean and tidy (no one will clean it for you). Heaters are provided in all rooms and hallways, and televisions are provided in the lounges, so we ask that you please do not bring your own.

Home Areas

Residents are placed in a home area with 7-10 others. It is either a floor in a block or an entire house. These groups hold regular meetings and organise social activities together. Each home area has its own:

  • Laundry (with an iron, a washing machine and a coin-operated dryer)
  • Washing lines (outside)
  • Hallway telephone
  • Kitchenette (with a fridge, sink and electric jug. Some areas have a microwave.)
  • Showers
  • Bathrooms and toilets
  • Recycling facilities
  • Wireless internet (available in most areas, data additional cost)
